What you need on Vimeo

At the time of writing, streaming to Vimeo with an external encoder over RTMP or RTMPS requires an Advanced, Premium or Enterprise plan with live events. Vimeo's help center lists how many streams each plan can run at once and the monthly bandwidth included, so check your plan before scheduling.

How long a Vimeo stream can run

Vimeo caps a single live stream at 12 hours. Round-the-clock streaming needs Vimeo's Extended streaming add-on, which is Enterprise-only, works over RTMP only, and turns off DVR, recording and simulcast for that event. For most teams, Vimeo works best for scheduled sessions, such as a recorded webinar or course module, shown at set times.

Vimeo's own prerecorded events vs StreamHouse

Vimeo can play an uploaded video as a scheduled prerecorded event from its own web production tool. StreamHouse is useful when you need more than that:

How to set it up

  1. 01In Vimeo, create or open a live event, choose to use an external encoder, and copy the RTMP or RTMPS URL and stream key from the stream settings.
  2. 02Upload your videos to StreamHouse and build a playlist.
  3. 03Add Vimeo as a destination with that URL and key.
  4. 04Start the stream or schedule it for the event's start time.

Settings for Vimeo

At the time of writing, Vimeo limits Advanced and Premium plans to 5,000 kbps at up to 30 fps, and Enterprise to 9,000 kbps at up to 60 fps. On Advanced or Premium, choose StreamHouse's 720p or 1080p 30 fps preset; the 1080p 30 fps output is encoded under that cap. Every video is prepared ahead of time to the same profile, so the stream stays steady between videos.
